Endeavour Hills

Endeavour Hills is a hilly, leafy suburb on the eastern edge of our service area, in the City of Casey. It was developed mainly from the mid-1970s through the 1980s, and it has the look of a planned suburb of that era: curving streets and courts, brick veneer family homes on sloping blocks, plenty of street trees and reserves, and the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre at its centre. The suburb takes its name from Captain Cook’s ship, and many streets carry names linked to that voyage. To the north and east, the Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve and Churchill National Park give the suburb a bush backdrop. Our handyman service covers all of Endeavour Hills 3802.

Homes in Endeavour Hills

1970s and 1980s brick veneer

The typical Endeavour Hills home is a brick veneer house built between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, often with a tiled roof, timber fascias, aluminium windows and a timber deck or pergola at the back. These homes are now thirty to fifty years old and most need regular maintenance. Common jobs include replacing worn door hardware, adjusting doors that have dropped, repairing plaster cracks, renewing bathroom silicone and grout, replacing kitchen cupboard hinges, repairing timber fascias and eaves, and fixing old timber decks and pergolas.

Split levels and sloping blocks

Because the suburb is built across hills, many homes are split-level or sit on sloping blocks with steps between levels, retaining walls and decks raised off the ground. That means more steps, handrails and balustrades to look after, more timber exposed to weather, and drainage to think about. Loose handrails, worn timber steps and decks with loose or rotten boards are common, and they are safety issues that should be fixed promptly.

Decks, steps and handrails

Why they matter here

On a sloping block, the deck, steps and handrails are often the main way in and out of the backyard. Timber exposed to the weather for decades weakens, especially where it sits close to soil or where water collects. A wobbly handrail or a soft step on a raised deck is a real fall risk, particularly for children and older people.

What we do

We check the deck frame, boards and fixings, replace rotten or split boards, refix loose boards with new screws, repair or rebuild timber steps with even rise and tread, and refix or replace handrails and balusters. We then clean and oil the timber to protect it. Where a deck frame has major structural damage, or a deck is high off the ground, rebuilding may need a building permit and a registered builder, and we will tell you if that is the case. See deck and pergola repairs and carpentry.

Fences on hills

Fences on sloping blocks are either stepped or raked to follow the ground, and both can be tricky to repair. Soil movement on slopes can push posts out of line, and runoff during heavy rain can wash soil away from post footings. We replace broken palings, straighten and resecure panels, replace rotten posts where we can, and repair gates that have dropped. Where retaining walls are involved, we can repair minor timber sleeper walls, but larger retaining walls over certain heights need engineering and a building permit. See fence repairs and gates.

Gutters, trees and the bush

Endeavour Hills has plenty of tall eucalypts, both in gardens and in the reserves around the suburb. Eucalypts drop leaves, bark and gumnuts all year round, so gutters fill quickly. Blocked gutters overflow and soak fascias and eaves, which eventually rot. We recommend gutter cleaning at least once a year, and twice for homes under or near large trees. Homes close to Churchill National Park and the Police Paddocks also benefit from keeping gutters clear of dry leaves through summer, as recommended in CFA bushfire preparation advice. See gutter cleaning.

Ageing in place

Many Endeavour Hills residents bought their homes when the suburb was new and have now lived there for thirty or forty years. Split-level homes with steps between rooms can become difficult with age, and simple aids make a big difference. We fit grab rails in bathrooms and toilets, handrails on internal and external steps, rails beside the front door, and lever door handles. We make sure every rail is fixed into solid framing or masonry so it will take a person’s weight. See aged care and disability rails.

Bathrooms and kitchens from the 1980s

Many Endeavour Hills homes still have original or early-update bathrooms and kitchens. They are often perfectly functional, but silicone breaks down, grout cracks and becomes mouldy, tiles come loose, cupboard hinges wear and drawer runners fail. Rather than a full renovation, a refresh can extend their life by years: new silicone, regrouting, replacing a few loose tiles, new hinges and runners, new handles, and refreshed towel rails and accessories. See tiling and regrouting, silicone and caulking and kitchen and cupboard repairs.

Families and rentals

Endeavour Hills remains a family suburb, with schools, sporting clubs and parks throughout. Families often need furniture assembly, TV mounting, shelving, child safety gates and furniture anchoring. The suburb also has rental homes managed by local agents, and we help landlords and property managers with routine maintenance and end-of-lease repairs. See property managers.

Drainage and water around the house

On sloping blocks, water flows downhill towards the house on one side and away on the other. Where water runs towards the house, it can pool against walls, under decks and around door thresholds. Signs to watch for include damp patches on internal walls near the floor, swollen door frames at the back door, moss and algae on paths that stay wet, and soil washed away from fence posts. We can clear blocked gutters and downpipe outlets above ground, reseal gaps around external door frames, replace swollen or rotten timber at thresholds, and pressure wash slippery paths. Stormwater drains below ground and site drainage are plumbing work, so if we notice a drainage issue we will recommend a licensed plumber.

Steep driveways and paths

Endeavour Hills has some of the steepest driveways in our service area. Moss, algae and leaf litter on a steep concrete driveway or path can make it dangerous to walk on, especially in winter. A pressure clean removes the build-up and restores grip. We take care around garden beds and do not blast loose mortar or soft surfaces. For paths and steps that remain slippery, handrails can add another layer of safety. See pressure washing.

Selling a family home in Endeavour Hills

Many older owners are selling homes they have lived in for decades. Before listing, a handyman visit can tackle the small things that make a home feel tired: patched walls, touched-up paint, renewed silicone, adjusted doors, new handles, a clean and oiled deck, repaired fences and a pressure-washed driveway. We can work to your agent’s timeline and help family members who are coordinating a sale on behalf of a parent.
