Bathroom Fixtures and Accessories

Small details make a bathroom work. A towel rail in the right spot, a toilet roll holder you can actually reach, a mirror and shaving cabinet at a sensible height, hooks for robes and towels, a shelf in the shower for shampoo, and a vanity whose doors and drawers close properly. When these fittings are loose, broken, missing or in the wrong place, the bathroom feels tired and awkward. Bathroom accessory installation and replacement is a common request across Dandenong and the surrounding suburbs, and it can change how a bathroom looks and feels without a renovation.

We install and replace bathroom accessories and non-plumbing fixtures in homes, rentals, aged care settings and commercial washrooms. Many bathrooms in the area date from the 1970s to the 1990s and still have their original chrome or plastic accessories, which can be updated in a single visit.

What we install and replace

  • Towel rails, towel rings and towel ladders (non-heated)
  • Toilet roll holders and spare roll holders
  • Robe hooks and towel hooks
  • Mirrors, including frameless, framed and bevelled-edge mirrors
  • Shaving cabinets and mirrored cabinets
  • Shower shelves, corner caddies and niches accessories
  • Soap dishes and soap dispensers
  • Shower curtain rails and tracks
  • Bath and shower grab rails (see our aged care and disability rails page)
  • Toilet seats
  • Vanity doors, drawers, handles and hinges
  • Bathroom shelving and storage units
  • Door locks and privacy latches on bathroom doors
  • Commercial washroom dispensers, hand dryer brackets and accessories

What we do not do

Plumbing

Replacing taps, mixers, shower heads connected to new pipework, toilets, cisterns, basins, waste pipes and anything that involves water supply or drainage must be done by a licensed plumber in Victoria. Some simple tasks, like swapping a toilet seat, are fine for a handyman, but anything connecting to water or waste is plumbing.

Electrical

Heated towel rails, exhaust fans, lighting, mirror demisters and shaver points involve electrical work and must be installed by a licensed electrician. We can mount non-electrical accessories around them.

Waterproofing

We do not alter waterproof membranes. When fixing accessories through tiles in wet areas, we seal every penetration with silicone so water cannot track along the screw into the wall.

Drilling through tiles without cracking them

Most bathroom accessories are fixed through wall tiles, which is where many DIY installs go wrong. Ceramic and porcelain tiles crack easily if drilled with the wrong bit, on hammer setting, or too close to the edge. Our method:

  • Mark the positions with masking tape on the tile, which stops the bit from wandering
  • Use diamond or tungsten carbide tile bits suited to the tile type, with hammer action off
  • Drill slowly, with water cooling for hard porcelain
  • Change to a masonry bit once through the tile, to drill into the wall behind
  • Use plugs suited to the wall, whether plasterboard, villaboard, brick or concrete
  • Seal the fixing holes with silicone in wet areas
  • Fix into the tile body, not the grout line, where possible, for strength

We also check for pipes and cables in the wall before drilling, since bathroom walls carry hot and cold water pipes to taps and showers.

Choosing the right positions

Towel rails

Towel rails are typically fitted around 1,100 to 1,200 millimetres above the floor for full-size bath towels, within easy reach of the shower or bath but away from the spray zone so towels stay dry. Double rails give each person their own space.

Toilet roll holders

The holder should be reachable without twisting or leaning, usually a little in front of the toilet pan and around 700 to 750 millimetres above the floor.

Mirrors and shaving cabinets

Mirrors are centred over the basin and set so the people using the bathroom can see themselves comfortably. Shaving cabinets must clear the tap and allow the doors to open fully.

Hooks

Robe hooks on the back of the door or near the shower, at a height that suits the family, including children.

Accessibility

In bathrooms used by older people or people with disability, accessory positions are chosen with reach and safety in mind. Towel rails should never be used as grab rails, as they are not designed to take a person’s weight. Grab rails are installed separately, fixed into studs or noggings.

Upgrading an older bathroom

A bathroom refresh can make a big difference without a renovation:

  • Replace mismatched or rusted accessories with a matching set in chrome, brushed nickel, matte black or brushed brass
  • Fit a new mirror or a shaving cabinet for more storage
  • Replace vanity handles and adjust or replace vanity doors and drawers
  • Reseal the shower, bath and basin with fresh silicone; see our silicone and caulking page
  • Regrout tired shower walls; see our tiling and regrouting page
  • Update the toilet seat
  • Fit a new privacy lock on the door

Changing a towel rail to a different size often leaves old holes in the tiles. We plan positions so new fittings cover old holes where possible, or fill and colour-match small holes.

Vanity repairs

Bathroom vanities suffer from water damage, swollen doors and bases, broken hinges and sticking drawers. We repair and replace vanity doors, drawers and hinges, and replace swollen kick boards. A badly water-damaged vanity carcass may need a full vanity replacement, which involves disconnecting and reconnecting plumbing and should be coordinated with a plumber.

Shower screens and curtains

We install shower curtain rails, adjust shower screen doors that have dropped, replace screen door handles and seals where parts are available, and reseal screens. Full frameless glass screen installation is specialist work best done by a glazier or screen company.

Commercial washrooms

Offices, clinics, cafes, shops, community halls and factories across Dandenong South and the wider area use us to install and replace washroom accessories: soap and paper towel dispensers, toilet roll dispensers, hand dryer brackets, mirrors, coat hooks, baby change tables and accessible bathroom grab rails. We use vandal-resistant fixings in public areas. See our commercial handyman page.

Rentals

Loose and broken towel rails, toilet roll holders and vanity doors are common items on rental condition reports. We fix them quickly for renters, landlords and property managers. See our property managers page.

Choosing finishes that last

Chrome

The classic bathroom finish. Chrome is durable, easy to match with existing tapware, and widely available. Quality chrome-plated brass lasts far longer than cheap chrome-plated zinc or plastic, which pits and peels in humid bathrooms.

Brushed nickel and stainless steel

Softer in appearance than polished chrome and better at hiding water spots and fingerprints. Grade 304 or 316 stainless steel resists rust well, while cheaper grades can show rust spots near the shower.

Matte black

Popular in modern bathrooms. Quality matte black finishes are powder-coated or PVD-coated for durability. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which can wear the finish.

Brushed brass and gold

Warm metal finishes have become popular again. PVD-coated finishes are much more durable than older lacquered brass, which tarnishes.

Matching your tapware

Accessories look best when they match the finish of the taps and shower fittings. If you are planning to change tapware through a plumber later, choose the accessory finish with that in mind.

Cleaning and care

Wipe accessories with a soft cloth and mild soap. Avoid bleach, abrasive pads and acidic cleaners like vinegar on finishes, as they wear coatings and cause pitting. Dry chrome after cleaning to prevent water spots. Check that screws are firm every so often, particularly on towel rails that get pulled.

Bathroom problems we often fix on the same visit

  • Toilet roll holders and towel rails that have pulled out of the wall
  • Wall plugs that have spun in their holes, which we replace with stronger fixings
  • Cracked tiles around old fixing points, which we can replace through our tiling service
  • Bathroom doors that stick or will not latch; see our door repairs page
  • Mouldy silicone around baths and showers
  • Missing tile trims and loose skirting tiles
  • Old adhesive marks and holes left from previous fittings

Bathroom safety for families

Bathrooms are one of the most common places for falls and accidents at home. Non-slip mats or treatments on slippery tiles, a grab rail at the shower or bath, a night light for night-time trips, and a privacy lock that can be opened from outside in an emergency are all simple, affordable improvements. Medicine cabinets should be out of reach of children or fitted with child locks. We can recommend and install all of these in one visit.

Small bathrooms and storage

Many bathrooms in older homes and units around Springvale, Noble Park and Doveton are compact, with little bench space. Smart accessories make the most of every wall: a mirrored shaving cabinet instead of a plain mirror, a slim shelf above the toilet, over-door hooks, a corner shower caddy, a ladder-style towel rail that holds more towels in less width, and a recessed niche style shelf where possible. We look at how the room is used and suggest options that fit without crowding the space.

Fixing into different bathroom walls

Bathroom walls behind tiles can be plasterboard, water-resistant villaboard, fibre cement sheet, solid brick or rendered masonry. Older homes may also have asbestos cement sheeting behind tiles, which we will not drill if suspected without testing first. Each wall type needs its own fixing, and heavy items such as mirrors, cabinets and grab rails need solid backing. We identify the wall before drilling so every fitting holds firm for years.

Before we leave, every fitting is checked for firmness, level and finish, and any dust or debris from drilling is cleaned away so the bathroom is ready to use.
