Lysterfield is the greenest suburb in our service area. Sitting at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges foothills, it combines leafy residential streets of larger family homes with semi-rural acreage properties, all surrounded by parkland. Lysterfield Lake Park, with its lake, walking trails and mountain bike tracks, and the neighbouring Churchill National Park cover a large part of the suburb, and kangaroos are a common sight at dusk. Most of Lysterfield falls in the City of Knox, with some of its rural land in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Its homes range from 1980s and 1990s brick family homes to newer large houses and rural properties with sheds, paddocks and long fence lines. Our handyman service covers all of Lysterfield 3156.
Homes in Lysterfield
Larger family homes
The residential parts of Lysterfield feature larger family homes, many two-storey, built mainly from the 1980s onwards, on generous blocks with established gardens. Common handyman work includes deck and pergola repairs, door repairs and adjustments, plaster patching, silicone and grout renewal, kitchen cupboard repairs, fence and gate repairs, and pressure washing of long driveways and outdoor entertaining areas.
Acreage and rural properties
Lysterfield’s acreage properties have their own maintenance needs: long timber and post-and-wire fences, farm and driveway gates, sheds and outbuildings, timber verandahs and decks, and large areas of paving and concrete. We take on non-structural repairs to fences, gates, sheds and outbuildings, and help with general property maintenance. See property maintenance.

Living near the bush
Bushfire preparation
Parts of Lysterfield border Churchill National Park and Lysterfield Park, and large areas of the suburb are in a designated bushfire prone area. CFA advice for preparing a home before summer includes keeping gutters clear of leaves and debris, keeping the area around the house clear of flammable material, and checking that doors, windows and vents are in good repair with no gaps where embers can enter. We clear gutters on single-storey homes and sections, re-mesh and repair flyscreens, fit draught and gap seals to doors, remove small loads of garden debris, and repair timber that is in poor condition. For a full bushfire plan, see the CFA’s guidance and your council’s advice. See gutter cleaning.
Leaves, bark and gumnuts
Eucalypts drop leaves and bark all year round, and Lysterfield has plenty of them. Gutters fill quickly, especially on homes close to the parks. Blocked gutters overflow and cause rot in fascias and eaves. We recommend at least two gutter cleans a year for homes near large trees, and more for properties surrounded by bush.
Wildlife
Kangaroos, wombats and other wildlife are part of life in Lysterfield. They can damage fences, particularly wire fences and gates, and possums can find their way into roof spaces through gaps in eaves and fascias. We repair fences and gates and can close up small gaps in timber eaves and fascias once any possums have been humanely removed by a licensed wildlife controller.
Decks and outdoor living
Lysterfield homes are built for outdoor living, with large decks, pergolas and verandahs that look out over gardens and bushland. Timber in these exposed positions weathers quickly, and decks near trees collect leaves that hold moisture and rot boards. We replace soft or split boards, refix loose boards, repair steps and balustrades, and clean and oil decks to protect them. For decks high off the ground or with structural frame damage, a registered builder may be needed, and we will tell you. See deck and pergola repairs.
Fences and gates on larger blocks
Large blocks mean long fences. Timber paling fences, post-and-rail fences and post-and-wire fences all need maintenance. Posts rot at ground level, rails split, palings fall away, wire sags and gates drop. We replace palings and rails, re-tension and repair wire, rehang gates and fit new hinges and latches. For complete new fence lines or long runs of rural fencing, a specialist fencing contractor is usually better value, and we will tell you if that is the case. See fence repairs and gates.
Long driveways and paved areas
Lysterfield properties often have long concrete or exposed aggregate driveways, paved courtyards and large outdoor entertaining areas. Shade from trees means moss and algae build up, making surfaces slippery in winter. A pressure clean restores the surface and improves grip. See pressure washing.
Two-storey homes
Many Lysterfield homes are two-storey. We work inside two-storey homes without any problem, and we clean gutters and do roof-edge work on single-storey sections only. For second-storey gutters, a specialist with the right access and safety equipment is needed.
Sheds and outbuildings
Acreage and larger blocks in Lysterfield often have garden sheds, workshops, stables, carports and other outbuildings. Over time, doors drop and drag, sliding door tracks clog or bend, timber cladding rots at ground level, and fixings rust. We rehang and adjust shed doors, clean and realign sliding door tracks, replace rotten timber, refix loose sheeting on low single-storey structures, and install shelving, hooks and workbenches inside. Small kit sheds can be assembled on a prepared, level base. Larger sheds and outbuildings may need a building permit, and we will tell you if that applies. See carpentry.
Inside larger family homes
Larger homes mean more doors, more bathrooms and more rooms to maintain. Many Lysterfield homes built in the 1980s and 1990s have three or more wet areas, each needing silicone and grout care every few years. Internal doors drop and catch, plaster cracks appear in high ceilings and stairwells, and kitchen cupboards wear. We work through the whole house in one visit where possible, room by room. For families, we also mount TVs, assemble furniture, hang large mirrors and artwork, fit shelving and anchor tall furniture to walls. See general home repairs.
Ageing in place in Lysterfield
Many Lysterfield residents have lived in their homes for decades and love the area too much to leave. Two-storey homes, sloping blocks and long driveways can become challenging with age. We fit handrails on stairs and external steps, grab rails in bathrooms and toilets, rails beside doors and lever handles, and we can point out trip hazards on paths and decks. See aged care and disability rails.
Preparing for sale
Buyers looking in Lysterfield expect homes to be well kept. Before listing, a handyman visit can tidy up the small things: patched walls, adjusted doors, fresh silicone, repaired flyscreens, an oiled deck, fixed fences and gates, clean gutters and a pressure-washed driveway. We work to your agent’s timeline.
